“Build a mutual foundation and search for agreement.”
Whether you are just making small talk with someone or conducting an important meeting, it is the search for agreement that moves the relationship ahead. All small talk is search for agreement. “Isn’t the weather wonderful today?” is one way that we search in everyday conversation.
Agreement gives you momentum, just as disagreement slows you down. Before you sit down to talk with a loved one, colleague or even your child, plan in advance what you and the other person are most likely to agree on and bring those things up first.
Build a foundation of mutual agreement and go up from there. It is what skilled negotiators do all the time, and, so should you, to make strong relationships and get what you need.
